Something I learned after six years of living in the Middle East is that they're not completely stupid. Don't know much there but they know BS from reality more than most of us do. They also know what counterproductive means. They were well aware of what happened to the IRA after they killed Lord Mountbatten.

Huh! What happened to the IRA after Mountbatten (1979) is that they continued to murder and maim for another dozen years. Beginning with Bill Clinton, IRA terror boss Gerry Adams was legitimized and invited to the White House every ST Patrick’s Day. The British eventually surrendered to them. IRA killers now serve in the Northern Ireland Parliament. And the murderers of Mountbatten—other victims of the terror attack that killed Mountbatten included a 12 year old boy—now swagger freely about the Irish Republic. Captured by an Irish Republic Government that oscillated between fear of, and sneaking support for, the IRA, the killers received ridiculously light sentences.
