I am probably having a brain cramp, but is it even possible to filibuster a SCOTUS nomination? I thought a simple majority was all they needed.

The Dems, including Obama, filibustered both Justices Roberts and Alito. The filibusters were both defeated.

There are currently 41 Republican senators. Thus, even before the death of Byrd, the Republicans could have sustained a filibuster (prevented a cloture vote).

I thought a simple majority was all they needed. It only takes one Senator (and a lot of coffee) to start a Filibuster. It takes 60 votes to stop it. If even one Senator decided to filibuster, the Senate would have to vote on cloture to stop it (unless the filibustering Senator fell asleep at the podium).
