The Crawford restricted space wasn't that big. It was only after he was tracked going towards the area that he was ‘waved’ off. They didn't even make him land, but had to fill out paper work in Abilene.
I'm not sure, but I think this all started around the Carter days. They used to have a small restricted area around his farm in Plains Georgia.
Bush has one now around his house in Dallas just a few miles from the DFW airport.
These are a pain but nothing like excessive 60 mile diameter restricted zones put in place around AF1 or Marine1 landings.
