International outcry - and the pleas of a devoted son - seem to have saved an Iranian woman from being stoned to death for adultery.
But while Sakineh Mohammedie Ashitani has been granted a reprieve, she is not the only woman sentenced to be stoned for adultery in Iran. There have been at least six sentences carried out since 2006, says Ann Harrison, an Iran expert at Amnesty International in London.
Adultery is the only crime that carries such a penalty in Iranian law, she said.
Only a handful of countries have laws calling for stoning, and Iran is the only one that carries out executions that way, Amnesty International records suggest.

I saw an American-born, Iranian ancestry, Eastern Studies Prof on Fox today, who slid in “you enjoy the benefits of science and math” that Iran preserved, while talking about the female Iranian soccer uniforms. He left out the stonings, beheadings, and kidnappings that are more mainstream than scientific achievements in that part of the world, (except in Israel...go figure.)

Look, the Bible calls for all kinds of strange punishments, including stoning (Deuteronomy 22:21), but that doesn't mean that civilized and modern countries that value civil rights should.
Whether it's in the Koran, or not, is wholly irrelevant. A modern society shouldn't do it, period.

Well, it seems to me that reasonable people can have honest intellectual disagreements about the barbaric Muslim tradition of stoning to death women who have been accused of infidelity, but surely we can all agree that ‘honor killings’ of daughters accused of fraternizing with Infidels are appropriate and please Allah.

NO, IT DOESN'T!!! The Bible (the Old Testament) TELLS stories about what happened in the past - the koran ORDERS its followers to do things, thus, keeping it current. The Bible is in the past (the Old Testament); the koran is current. There is NOTHING in the New Testament of the Bible that is even remotely like the koran.
Since the Ten Commandments are (your words) "in the past", does that mean they may be ignored? I think not. It seems to me that the Ten Commandments are just about as "current" as you can get.
It's a slippery slope to assert that the Old Testament is just a collection of stories about the past, that carry no meaning for contemporary life, and that the New Testament is all that matters.
Most of the more widely distributed ancient religions have scriptural passages that may be either taken out of context, or may actually suggest or command something (a consequence) that would be untenable today. I have no idea what the Koran says (or doesn't say) about stoning, nor do I care. What I do care about is the contemporary behavior of allegedly civilized nations comporting themselves within a very basic framework of contemporary human rights.
