Forget the death penalty for terrorists. Now even life without parole may vi olate their "human rights."
So, at least, ruled the Paris-based European Court of Human Rights, which has barred the extradition of four Islamist radicals to the United States for trial.
The reason: The four face the possibility of a life sentence in a federal supermax prison -- where inmates are confined to their cells for 23 hours a day.
And that, says the court, may constitute psychological torture.
As opposed, say, to the kind of murder and mayhem the four men hoped to inflict on thousands of Americans.
Among the suspects is Abu Hamza al-Masri, now serving seven years in the UK for soliciting to murder.
Washington has sought his extradition since 2004 on charges he tried to set up a terrorist training camp for al Qaeda in Oregon. Al-Masri, who lost his hands in an explosion in Afghanistan, reportedly has helped kidnappers in Yemen as well as the Taliban and Afghan Jihad.
