Our multicultural society only works when people value and identify with being American first and foremost.

Most people will never be able to do that, ever. It's just human nature. They will always identify and group with the lowest common denominator -- race, family, religion, politics, etc. We've even seen hatred, true hatred, towards others just because they cheer for a different sports team. It will never change.

Point taken. This is why it irritates me when people make broad statements about religion being the cause of wars etc. People have always found reasons to faction themselves and reasons to hate and war against each other. If there was no such thing as religion they would find something else to fight about, for sure.
