LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A white former transit officer was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Thursday in the shooting death of an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform in a 2009 encounter that set off days of rioting in the city.
The jury deliberated more than six hours over two days to convict Johannes Mehserle in the killing of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was shot to death as he lay face-down.

Sounds like a reasonable decision. How do you mistake a gun for a taser?
Good, I am tired of crackers getting away with murder. Seriously though, he did murder the unamred, handcuffed, helpless guy.
And the riots begin.
Sadly, the race profiteers insist on making this incident a racial one — thought nothing in the either participants actions showed race as a motivation.
I’m going to go burn some vehicles and riot!

Given the facts, that’s probably the appropriate verdict. Now we’ll see how the post-sunset reaction goes.
I think most city police departments are little more than uniformed street gangs, and should be disbanded.
The cop in this case blew away a kid in cold blood, then he and his buddies tried to use muscle to cover it up. If the riots begin and there is blood running in the streets, the Blue Gang will have no one but themselves to blame.
At the time, they were sharing tasers. He’d been given one configured “same side”.

How does a police officer mistake a gun for a taser???????????????????????????????????????
It is also fair in this case to ask if he would have gotten similar leniency if he was not a cop. Consider: last year a Virginia man named Ryan Frederick got convicted of a higher charge of voluntary manslaughter with 10 years for killing a cop. Frederick shot the cop as he was busting into his house during a no-knock raid after mistaking him for a burglar.
What Mehserle did was a lot worse and a lot more blatant and wrong than what Frederick did. Yet he gets a lower charge with only 2-4 years?
If someone killed this particular cop, I’d be inclined to vote for a soimilar conviction.
The fact is the cop murdered the victim and the DA put on a case that guaranteed this verdict when he could have gotten murder 1 or 2.
Hell, nothing short of Murder 1 would have been good enough for these race whores.
As for Oakland: “Burn, Baby, Burn”
What Mehserle did was significantly worse than Frederick. Yet Mehserle gets a lesser charge with only 2-4 years. That in itself is illustrative that he got off comparatively easy because he's a cop.
If the cop were to somehow become the victim of a killing, I think involuntary manslaughter would be an appropriate charge.
No, I live 10 miles from the incident, and was just listening to the news conference. Trust me, this ain't gonna be pretty!
