Government will take over spill response information website; Move could happen in days

The US government is expected to take over control of the central information website on the Gulf oil spill response that has been run jointly by various agencies and BP for the 2½ months since the rig explosion.

The Department of Homeland Security wants a one-stop shop for information that is completely overseen by the government as it settles into the long-haul of dealing with the response to the disaster. The U.S. Coast Guard falls under Homeland Security's authority.

BP and the federal government are part of a unified command that is working together to try to contain the oil gusher, but the government has been directing BP at every turn.

A DHS spokesman told The Associated Press on Sunday that the joint relationship won't change when the website is given a dot-gov address instead of a dot-com address.

But who can post information to the site would change. Details are still being worked out.

The spokesman, Sean Smith, said the government wants to be as transparent as possible and increase Americans' access to information.

BP is helping pay for the current website. The government could still bill BP when it takes over the site.

The deepwaterhorizonresponse.com site may still be maintained during the changeover, but ultimately it will be taken down altogether when the government moves the response information to its own website.

A BP spokesman did not immediately respond to several requests for comment on the move, which could occur within days.

A frequent critic of the administration's response to the oil spill, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., was skeptical the change would amount to much.

So the obama adminstration will be controlling the information related to the spill?

I am sure this will be one big "Praise Hussein Obama" site.

And another obama clown is telling us that the government wants to be as "transparent as possible." Yeah, we know what that means with these clowns.

Why not just let George Soros' moveon.org manage the site?

I learned in junior high school about PROPAGANDA when we were studying communism and socialism?

A big concern was that BP’s public relations department was running the website before and a lot of info wasn’t available.

Wonderful! Now any accusations of censorship can come home to roost with the rest of the chickens, on DuhWon's 'in complete control' shoulders. There's damage control going on, but the only oil they'll be dealing in is snake oil. BP will be out of the picture, except for paying the tab.

Maybe some of the syncophants of deer leeder can figure out this is a pattern, here...by November and move to castrate the effort to destroy our country by voting to change out the Congress, enough to neuter the regime, anyway.

Video proof the Government is about ready to push BP out of the way and take over the operations.
Incredible video of Government contractors practicing on dry land what they will be doing 5000 feet down.

well, as of last week, you can’t get within 20 meters of a response vessel or a boom. they shut down the airspace over the spill over a month ago.

if you are going to control the information, the web site really is the next step.

Imagine if republicans had done this? Could you imagine the response from the left?

Government shouldn’t be in the business of controlling information.

I totally agree, but I don’t think a companies public relations department should be in charge either.

Imagine if people started dying while eating Rice Crispies and those three elves were running the information website for the crisis.

Who gets their info from the “news” or the govt anyway? The internet provides many opportunities for submitting and gathering real information. Oh yeh, we are going to have that internet kill switch thingy now. Isn’t that what Iran did last summer?

Have you actually been reading the site? The press releases are coming directly from the federal government. One daily item, for example, is called “The Ongoing Administration-wide Response to the Deepwater BP Oil Spill”.

From the beginning, BP’s own site http://www.bp.com/extendedsectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=40&contentId=7061813
has contained a lot more detailed information than the deepwaterhorizon website that’s the subject of this story.

The deepwaterhorizonresponse.com site may still be maintained during the changeover, Never checked out that site until today. Been following this one:

http://www.geoplatform.gov/gulfresponse/

More detailed that the deepwater site but if the information is true...who knows?
