First, it was Sarah Palin. Then it was Arizona Right to Life and the National Rifle Association. Most recently, the revered National Review gave its imprimatur to McCain.
When Hayworth entered the race in January, McCain was at his most vulnerable point in decades. Polling showed McCain had a lead within the margin of error and was struggling to redefine himself as a Republican loyalist. But polls now show McCain with a solid lead.
Baker said the McCain campaign may have engineered a sort of domino effect: Each endorsement shows the next group that backing McCain is a safer bet than it may have first appeared, and Republican voters seem to be following the same trend.
McCain has focused Hayworths reputation in Congress as a pork-barrel spender, a serious offense to many conservatives. And the senator has run an undeniably negative campaign against Hayworth, openly mocking him and attacking his credibility.
The McCain campaign has posted videos online poking fun at Hayworth for questioning the authenticity of President Barack Obamas birth certificate, suggesting that allowing gay marriage could pave the way for men to wed horses, and especially for appearing in a 2007 infomercial urging people to take advantage of free money from government grants.
The infomercial for the National Grants Conferences has been the most damning revelation yet, combining the promotion of government spending with a host of informercial stereotypes. It prompted the popular FOX News personality Glenn Beck to declare that Hayworths campaign is over.
If McCain had a more conservative challenger, National Review wrote, the endorsement might have gone elsewhere. But while Hayworths record is conservative, the article read, it isnt conservative enough to make a compelling case against McCain.
He may not be Marco Rubio, but hes not Arlen Specter either, the editorial said of McCain.

Look, if you’re going to support amnesty you’re on the wrong website. You might try WAnkers for McCain.
Don’t be a traitor to the cause. McCain is a traitor to the constitution.
FUJM!!
GO, JD, GO!!
Rebellion is brewing.
B U M P
Where the hell was McCain in 2008? Setting everything up for Obama to win.
The man is a POS, war record or not. He is as responsible for the 2006 downfall as anyone. McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Leiberman. Who would bother voting Republican when their representative push the Liberal Agenda.
JD is no Churchill, but McCain certainly is our Chamberlain.
How effing stupid people are.
I like Sarah Palin a lot but nothing in the world could get me to support McLame again. He’s trash.
I don’t support Amnesty. I’m against immigration reform of any kind. If they want to come here, they need to get in line and do so legally.
I don’t support McCain either. I just don’t think he’s a traitor to his country.
Back when I joined FR, it was “McCain/Palin country.” Why would we ever support a traitor? We didn’t. We supported Palin. We took McCain because he came with Palin. Even so, I could never hold my nose and vote for someone I thought was a traitor. I joined many other freepers and voted for McCain/Palin.
McCain is wrong about so many things. He could have had Obama by the throat in 2008. Instead, he took the “high road” and defended Obama’s honor rather than defending us. For me that was the nail in the coffin. I was done with him. I think he’s a fool, but I don’t think he’s a traitor.
I know you disagree.
I’m not a traitor to the cause. I don’t support McCain.
It was Palin country. We never supported asshole McCain.
McCain is a traitor!
Yep, I sure do -
it was a big mistake, and McCain has retrospective to see the harm, but continued down the same treasonous path.
I’m local to JD. I’m calling right now to find out what I can do to help. John McCain is part of the cabal in Congress that is tearing our country down.
I swore that I’d never support that treasonous bastard and am ashamed that I allowed myself to be swayed by Palin’s siren song. And how did that bastard repay us for our support? By suspending his campaign and rushing back to DC, not to defend the constitution, but by to push the unconstitutional Marxist TARP program that killed American capitalism and ushered in the era of Obama Marxism and tryanny. It was a dark day for America when traitor McCain won the nomination.
Bush really screwed us over on his way out. And traitor McCain went all in with our money (and freedom) and lost it all.
And, yes, McCain is definitely a traitor. He’s the enemy within.
Rebellion is brewing!!
I guess our definitions of “traitor” are different. McCain has certainly betrayed conservative values and broken our trust. If that makes him a “traitor to the cause,” then so be it. I guess that definition fits.
But I think of a traitor as someone who violates allegiance to the sovereignty of his country. To me, that’s Barack Obama and his ilk.
That might make me naïve but it shouldn’t make me a traitor to the cause.
That’s why the debates are so important.
You’re right. I stand corrected. McCain is a traitor.
AZ Freepers:
JD’s website is http://www.jdforsenate.com
McCain is all about McCain. He is the poster-boy for everything that’s wrong in Congress. It is high time to send this RINO packing and demand our country back.
This requires action.
At the bottom of the page to the right is a Volunteer sign-up form. I volunteered to do several things. Please consider doing the same.
Do not ever try to make a comparison between Reagan and McCain. Different time, totally different circumstances and attitudes.
If we get a GOP POTUS, McCain will stab them in the back repeatedly and render them ineffective.
Formula for failure and advancement of progressives.
I consider creating laws that defy the 1st Amendment to be a direct assault on our sovereignty and no demonstration of allegiance at all. Taking money from Soros and funding left-wing think tanks for him doesn't soften my views on that either.
As for the mood of FR; McCain was well-hated even in 2000. There is a large archive of material to that effect.
He’s a traitor to the constitution that he swore to uphold, so help me God!!
McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, TARP. All unconstitutional acts of tyranny. Treason!! Tools of Marxism!! McCain is a useful idiot!! (look it up)
Eff ‘em!!
Go, JD, GO!!
Rebellion is brewing!!
