Fighter engine bio-fuel testing underway

An F110 engine that powers the F-16 Fighting Falcon recently began performance testing at Arnold Engineering Development Center using a 50/50 blend of JP-8 conventional aviation fuel and a bio-fuel derived from the oil contained in the seed of the camelina plant, commonly known as false or wild flax. "The testing recently initiated at AEDC will be the first dedicated, uninstalled engine tests conducted by the Air Force [on Hydro-processed Renewable Jet (HRJ) blended fuel]," said Jeff Braun, the Air Force's Alternative Fuels Certification Office director.

"These will also be the first engine tests conducted by the Air Force [on HRJ blended fuel] in a facility that can simulate altitude effects on the aircraft. The data produced will be very, very valuable in this program. In fact, we plan on using that data to justify and support upcoming flight tests of the F-22, the C-17 and then possibly even the F-15."

This test supports the bio-fuels certification effort of this field engine, said 1st Lt. Antonio Brunson, 717th Test Squadron program manager for the first phase of the test.

Testing will simulate the overall engine conditions experienced in the full flight envelope and include ignition light-off, throttle transients, augmenter lights and sequencing along with screech and rumble monitoring.

Military aircraft engines operate with afterburners to enhance thrust, but these can create large unsteady pressure oscillations termed screech and rumble, which can damage the afterburner structure.

Lieutenant Brunson, who also was the project manager on earlier 50/50 synthetic fuel and JP-8 testing on military jet engines at AEDC, said he is excited about the test underway.

The Air Force currently uses 50/50 blend in their B-52 fleet. They are just trying to save a little money.

I’m wondering if synthetic jet fuel can be derived from coal? Ordinary gasoline and even diesel fuel can be synthesized through gassification - that technology has been around since the 1930’s - but I’m wondering if the high end stuff can be synthesized as well.

It seems to me that growing fuel for our fighters could really going to put a dent in our food supply.

Well, looking at how bio-diesel gels up on the tanks of truckers in the cold climates, I could just imagine how this stuff will react to the cold climate at 40,000 feet.

The Germans did it during World War II.Before and during World War 2, Germany built many large production plants, solely for wartime purposes, as the produced fuel was much more expensive than petroleum based fuels. The synthetic fuel, produced from coal, was critically important to Germany during the entire war to overcome its dependence on imported petroleum.

Pure lunacy propagated by Corporate powers that want to foist the greatest money scam on the world known to all of mankind.

This reflects Satan's reach into common commerce and political activities in the current world power setting.
My point: stop blaming the artifacts (political correctness), and start identifying the evil that is pushing it.

But unlike the geographically small nation of Germany, we have a nearly unlimited quantity of oil under our own soil especially as it relates to the total quantity of fuel our military could ever use.

Lets see this politically correct crap has to stop, Coal would make a very nice jet fuel assuming we had NO oil.

The water based foams on the shuttle tanks great results there and the “O” Ring putty without the asbestos. Great Job someone should be in Prison.

Bio fuel? Our fleet of dump trucks tried using that mixed crap last year and it fouled our storage tanks, truck tanks, and their respective filters. Its "green" bio-crap that grows green and brown snot in your tanks, and yes they said it had compounds added to kill the algae. But I guess the algae didn`t know it was there, hope the stuff in our planes notices.
