Later photos show a boom on the left side.

I think we’re seeing part of the evolutionary process. The MSM was claiming the slots on the starboard bow sucked up oil, which seems to be disproved by the photo which shows they’re outlets, not to mention the fact that they’re well above the waterline. I think they may be running into the same situation as the Costner machine, namely the incredibly low petroleum to sea water ratio that you’re dealing with if you just try to cruise through and injest everything in sight. The solution that’s working for his macine is for the skimmers to corral and concentrate oil, then for his machine to come into play. Could be they’re trying something similar here. The waves are supposed to calm down tonight, things may be better in the morning.

You kind of get the feeling from those other photos that it’s inhale port, exhale starboard, huh? There was also one where it looked like they’d ballasted it down to port.

Almost everything I read has some damn catch, is proven to be false, or distorted or otherwise regarding this whole mess.
As I type I feel a real need to consider how should I say calming my thought train....hold on a minute.....
OK. I am back with a very cold twelve ounce can of Coors Extra Gold lager.
Click....glug.. ahhhhh. Click.... cig lit. OK. Now where where we. Why do I get the impression the whale is going to turn out to be less then useful in it's trial run(s).
At least in my case I was given to believe it would cut through swaths of thick oil and allow it to suck up all in it's path then turn around say a few miles and come back and do same over and over again, like pushing a vacuum cleaner across a carpet more less.
But one only has to view the many shots of the sea surface to see there is no huge thick slicks of oil, but patches that quickly move about due to local wind conditions moving waves a given way.
The whale would have to cover thousands of square miles worth of area and most probably miss 90% of the oil that continues to be dispersed into local patches.
Perhaps I have been mislead into understanding what level of oil slick was being formed. Plus the dispercents obviously lower the oil's vicosity further preventing an even layer of thick oil from forming on the sea's surface.
I sense this effort is one in futility. And BP will have to pick up the tab, probably knowing the whale taint going to do what it was claimed to be able to do in this particular scenario. I am open to corrections.
