This isn’t new. When I completed a 2 year communications program at a local community college in 1974, the last weeks were devoted to job searches. Our very diverse class was told, in no uncertain terms, that white males were “over-represented in the Bay Area and were un-hireable.” The reps from the local network affiliates said that they’d instantly hire minority females, even with 2.0 GPAs, since they could fill several quota slots that way.
When I pointed out that this was nothing more than blatant discrimination, I was told that it was “affirmative action,” and furthermore, I should be “proud to be among the first to right historic wrongs.”
It didn’t matter that I’d been supporting myself since I was 16, when my parents suffered a very nasty, alcohol-fueled divorce. It didn’t matter that I was also working full time while trying to get a college education, and that I had a 3.75 GPA. I had the wrong skin color and gender, so I couldn’t get a broadcast job locally.
And today? If you’re not English and Spanish bilingual, forget getting a retail job in California.
This madness has to stop.
