Tent city rises in Berkeley to protest proposed state budget cuts

I'm always curious about the people who organize these things, so I did a little lookup on Danny McMullan and the Disabled People Outside Projects. Here's the skinny. McMullan was in a motorcycle accident in 1994. The sources I found were a little vague, but apparently he lost a leg and sometimes uses a prosthesis and at other times uses a wheel chair.

He lived on the streets for a while, but received social security and section 8 payments. He made use of the Free Box in People's Park, where some people drop off donations of clothes and stuff for use by the homeless and transients. He started Disabled People Outside Projects as a support group for disabled people.

He's had run ins with the cops, getting arrested in 2006 when he got in some kind of confrontation because the cops were trying to shut down the Free Box or something. Details are sparse and only given on sites sympathetic to McMullan. He's married and has kids. According to the articles I could find, Disabled People Outside Projects does not receive government funds, but operates off fundraising and donations.

I won't draw any conclusions and have tried to present the background info without any editorial slant.

(laughing) We were in Germany on 9/11 and were living in Heidelberg when the demonstrations started outside Campbell Barracks. A few of those tents popped up along Romerstrasse. We had to walk past them on our way to the shoppette and I used to remark to my husband-LOUDLY- “gee honey, can you imagine what it smells like in those?”

The governor's proposal called for drastic cuts to in-home support services, which McMullan said would likely "put severely disabled people and elderly people in nursing homes instead of being able to stay in their own homes."

So then, the response of voluntarily living in a "tent city", is that "sublime irony", or "not clear on the concept", or what.

It is guaranteed that every one of these people are on Social Security Disability (whether they ever paid a dime in or not) which is usually substituted by the state plus are on every state program available to them.
How is that independent? Their very existence relies on the generosity of hard working taxpayers.
This is what happens when the state and feds take over charity because charity is what it is.
