New tax casts cloud over tanning business

As a hospital nurse in Summit County, Tammy Mathia says she wants the federal government to help many of her patients afford health insurance.

But as the owner of tanning salons in Canton and Alliance, Mathia strenuously objects to Congress’ levying a 10 percent tax on her customers to help pay for it.

“I’m not against contributing to health care, because I’m a nurse,” she said. “I’m 100 percent toward socialized health care. I’m not for targeting one business.”

The federal 10 percent tanning tax took effect nationwide Thursday. It’s the first of several taxes that will be levied as a result of Congress’ passage in March of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which will provide hundreds of billions of dollars in federal subsidies over the next decade to make health insurance more affordable for those with low to moderate incomes.

Of course, this only works in Ohio between the months of May and September or so.

Yeah we get between 5 and 10 totally sunny days/month during the spring and summer.

But faithful tanners are hooked, it won’t be easy for them to stop even if they have to pay extra taxes.

It's amazing to see people who are quite poor still smoking. The government knows that we can always afford our addictions.

I wonder if they're stupid enough to try a Whiskey Tax again?

So how does this idiot think her precious socialized medicine will be funded?

Gotta love the "gimme, but keep your hands off of my stash" mentality!

Yeah we get between 5 and 10 totally sunny days/month during the spring and summer.

And, of course, those folks who have day jobs can't go out in the sun during the right time of day except on the weekend. However, Obummer is rapidly fixing that problem (jobs, that is).

Sooner or later, something you love or something you use will be taxed, or the taxes already on those things will go through the roof.

What you do unto others will be done unto you -- sooner or later.
