Coryell was a great man as well as a great coach. He was a paratrooper in World War II. Here is a partial list of his assistant coaches at San Diego State: John Madden, Joe Gibbs, Ernie Zampeze. Bill Walsh was Coryells offensive co-ordinator with the Chargers back about 1980. All were influenced by Coryell. The players liked him too.

That is an impressive list. He must really have taught the game well.

That is an impressive list; but Walsh was with the Chargers in ‘76. By ‘80, he was the coach of the 49ers.
