NASA Delays Death of Space Shuttle Program to 2011

NASA's space shuttle program has gotten a brief reprieve, as the space agency plans to keep shuttle flights going until next year.

The space agency made it official Thursday after weeks of hints about the potential for launch delays. Managers agreed to postpone the next-to-last shuttle launch until Nov. 1. Discovery had been scheduled to fly to the International Space Station in September.

The very last mission now has a Feb. 26 launch date. Endeavour will close out the shuttle program by delivering a major scientific instrument to the space station. Why the delays? NASA says it needs more time to prepare the cargo for those two flights.

As for the possibility of an extra shuttle mission, NASA says no decision is expected before August. NASA would like to fly Atlantis one more time before the fleet is retired.

Discovery's STS-133 mission will deliver spare parts and an Italian room called Leonardo to the International Space Station. Formerly a cargo pod, the Leonardo module has been refitted to serve as a permanent storage room on the space station. The mission will also carry a humanoid robot called Robonaut 2 for tests aboard the station.

There was no manned space flight during Carter’s term, so its mildly synergistic that it will also die during this regime.

There was no manned space flight during Carter’s term,

True, but to be fair, Carter never attempted to wreck the space program, AND, the original launch date for the first shuttle mission was April, 1979. Issues with several shuttle systems, most importantly the ceramic heat shield tiles pushed the first launch back to April, 1981.

Obumbles ordered NASA to redirect the space program monies to ‘predominantly Muslim countries” starting with Indonesian countries.
He has no right to close the space program. This program is, by law, under the direction of Congress.

I haven't talked with my contact at the Space Center about this delay yet and how many jobs my get a short reprieve, but this gives a bit more time to start hitting our conresscritters hard on keeping our space program going - and NOR send the monies to ‘predominantly Muslim Countries”, per the directive NASA got from obumbles.

If we want to stop this, we need to freep our congress critters NOW - demand they take back their right concerning the space program and save the upwards to 100,000 that are soon to lose their jobs in Florida, Houston, Huntsville, etc.

For ex: This fall, every single person at the Kennedy Space Center will be FIRED. (some may be delayed now for a few months?)

They can then ‘reapply’ for jobs - at entry level.
Still, 7,000 will NOT be rehired (the rehirees will be little less than a maintenance crew).
With the base jobs and the 10’s of thousands of base dependent businesses and jobs in the area, upwards of 35,000 will be put out of work in the area, plunging it into 15-20% unemployment. (Same scenario in Houston and another 1,000+ from Huntsville.

Even democratic Congressmen/women are now speaking out and/or bucking obumbles. They are no longer cowing in his shadow, which is getting thinner every day.

NOW is the time to call/FAX/email your congress critters and DEMAND they stop obumbles illegal actions burying our Space Program. They can make points for themselves by ACTUALLY SAVING JOBS

It would be the first verifiable “JOBS SAVED”

Excerpt:
“The chief of NASA says Indonesia is being considered as a likely space mission partner for the United States, since President Obama has ordered the agency to reach out specifically to nations dominated by Islam.”

Wake up, folks. Freep your congresscritters NOW. Or forever hold your peace. (Indeed, we stop this CICINO Now, or we will soon find we CAN'T speak freely.)

I was a young lad and still remember the end of Apollo as the beginning of THE MALAISE. Perceptions matter in politics, no?

Absolutely. I remember the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975 and thought, "Oh well, shuttle missions in less than four years."

Didn't quite work that way.

AND, Nixon was truly to blame for the gap in manned flight. Missions (lunar landings) up to Apollo 20 had been scheduled and crews selected. Nixon put the kibosh on them.

In other words, they played a game of chicken and lost the budget battle.
