California: Thousands descend on Capitol for SEIU Local 1000 rally
Sacramento Bee ^ | June 30, 2010 | by Jon Ortiz

An ocean of purple washed over the west side of the state Capitol today as thousands of SEIU Local 1000 members wearing the union's signature t-shirts rallied for a new contract and held signs that pushed a new message, "I am California."

Guadalupe Gonzalez carried a sign that read, "Hey Arnold, I can't feed my dog on minimum wage! Why do you want to kill my puppy?"

Gonzalez said she makes less than $30,000 per year working in a Los Angeles-area office of the Department of Food and Agriculture. She's worried that just one or two months of her pay being withheld to $7.25 per hour would "put me on the street."

Even worse, she said, is the uncertainty of what her Aug. 1 paycheck will be. The 3rd District Court of Appeal is expected to rule any time on a trial court decision that Controller John Chiang overstepped his authority during the 2008 budget impasse when he refused to comply with administration letters instructing him to withhold state workers' pay.

"This makes everybody insecure," Gonzalez said.

“Hey Arnold, I can’t feed my dog on minimum wage! Why do you want to kill my puppy?”

If she can’t afford to take care of her self and her family she has no business supporting an animal. Totally irresponsible.

I wonder if America will vote simply on appearance and style in another election again. Sometimes people just need to learn the hard way.

Hey Gubmint union RATs:

However many of you there are, it’s about three times too many.

However much you are paid, it’s about three times too much.

You do-nothing government “employees” are the ultimate welfare cheats.

I think it was Robert Heinlein who said that any government employee, including teachers, who is not satisfied with the conditions of his employment, is free to get a job and work for a living.

lol, never heard that one.

I understand the tiered hiring with the grocery stores the unions have those workers only making minimum wage then paying the union dues. Those jobs used to be really nice to have, not so much now.

The old timers make 18 - 25.00 an hour, now whatever minimum is and still pay the unions and fees etc for uniforms? sucks. Unions have out lived their usefulness.

Gov. Chris Christie said something similar to a school teacher a few weeks ago.

Screeching purple-shirted parasitic thugs. You have ruined what used to be a great state. We’ll see if there are enough patriots left in CA to take their state back. Somehow, I doubt it. The rest of us are going to get stuck with the bill.

Government employees often feel a sense of entitlement to their job, and to the many fringe benefits. Particularly, they feel entitled to regular step raises, whether or not they are merited by higher productivity. They fail Economics 100A.

Gonzalez said she makes less than $30,000 per year...

That means she makes just under $15.00 per hour. That's good money, even for California. Her real problem is the taxes she pays everytime she turns around. And her inability to keep at least one month's expenses in a savings account. Crocadile tears for Ms Gonzales!

Tough. Then move in with one of those myriad of retired government workers/teachers/firemen/etc out there who are pulling down a pension of $80,000/yr+ for doing nothing.

From another Freeper (sorry lost the name)_

My sister worked -for a while- at the State Department of Revenue.
A state representative requested the head of the department to hire one of her “proteges”.

This woman arrived promptly at 9:00 AM, walked into a supplies closet and closed the door - only to reappear at 4:30PM.
Inspection revealed that she had a portable TV, a cooler and a cot with pillow in the closet.

When sis pointed this out - repeatedly - to the department
head, SHE was asked to leave....and did.

Over time, any government agency will become populated with many (not all, of course) drones. The more ambitious leave for better jobs, the lay-abouts gain seniority and can’t be fired. Moreover, in our state, it is considered a perk of office to get a state job (35% greater pay than comparable private work and l72% better retirement and medical benefits) for your unsuccessful brother in law.
Even some of our better politicians are fighting a proposal to declare the state employment records “open”. I guess they have some “hires” they need to protect as well.

It has been noted that California’s decline began in 1978 when Jerry Brown, as Governor, allowed state workers to be represented by Unions. Barring evidence to the contrary, I would agree.
Take back our Government - we pay for and deserve better!

The State’s broke. The socialist SEIU is not immune from belt-tightening.

Here’s what it is like in the UK:

Feet up: Life is a breeze at the whistleblower’s council office, where staff take six months’ sick leave and enjoy very flexible hours

I’m a senior planning officer: it’s my job to inspect buildings, grant planning approval and to guide members of the public looking to alter their homes.

Our department has 60 employees and  -  until last Tuesday  -  a budget of £22million.

I’ve been there for two years and in that period the only time I’ve ever seen every employee present and correct was at the Christmas party.
At least ten people will be off sick on any one day. The departmental record holder is Doreen  -  she has worked a grand total of eight days in 14 months.

Doreen must be the unluckiest woman in the country.

In the past year and a half she claims she has: fallen victim to frostbite; been hit by a car; and accidentally set herself on fire.
But she’s really pulled out all the stops with her latest excuse:

witchcraft.

That’s right, Doreen believes somebody in Nigeria has cast a spell on her and that it would be unprofessional of her to attempt to do the job she is paid £56k a year for while under the influence of the spell.
She has already been off for four months on full pay.

I’ve no idea how long this spell lasts, but my guessing would be six months to the day  -  the exact amount of time council employees can take off on full pay before their money is reduced.

But having just eight weeks of full pay left won’t be a problem for Doreen and the rest of the council’s sickly staff  -  they’ll simply return to work when the six months is up, put in a day or two’s work and then go off sick for another six months on full pay again.

Easy.

Of course they have to provide sick-notes from a doctor, but as you can buy fake ones online for £10 it’s never proved a problem.
