Ban to begin on phosphate-laden dishwasher soap (WA and OR Tomorrow)
Seattle Times ^ | Today | unknown

BREMERTON, Wash. —

Washington and Oregon are banning the sale of phosphate-laden dishwasher detergent starting Thursday.

The Kitsap Sun reports that familiar brands are still available but they will have lower levels of phosphates.

Experts say phosphates promote plant growth and may degrade water quality in lakes and streams.

The ban has already been in place in Spokane and Whatcom counties in Washington state since 2008. Some shoppers in Spokane had been crossing into Idaho to buy the older soaps.

I got mine, do you have yours, 14 states affected.

I purchased a 2 year supplied. Don't be fooled, many stores have already changed out their stock and you still see Cascade on the shelf but with zero phosphates.

Phosphates are removed at the sewage plant and all this does is reduce the amount of Phosphates that are going into the Sewage Plant that removes it.

Phosphates is also a component of common fertilizers used on lawns, gardens, and farms.

Without Phosphates, the cleaning ability of your dishwasher will be greatly reduced. Phosphates break up food and grease from your dishes, without this; much of this must be hand scrubbed.

My Mother doesn't have the upper arm strength to do this, she is partially disabled. Plus I use this to clean my medical devices.

Food Poisoning, Restaurants with food particles on the utensils.

Save the planet, kill some people.

Try Finish Glass Magic, you can order it on Amazon. I have ordered 3 cases, because I live in WA state.
I noticed that my dishes were not getting clean. I have hard water. I did a google search, and found out about this law being passed. I did another google search, and found out about this product. It has phosphates in it, and it does work.
I will just go around the law, and order on the internet or go out of state for the dishwashing products that I need.
A person wrote on the Seattle Times comments that you can use TSP (can be found at a hardware store), add one scoop to your dishwasher.

Go buy a couple of boxes of tri sodium phosphate (Industrial strength cleaner) and add a small amount as needed to each load of limp d**k s**t that they are selling now, works great. Been doing it a long time, Piss on every ecofreak alive, each and every one.

I’ve seen TSP warnings that say it is toxic when ingested.

Curious though if it’s possible to buy “phosphates” and what amount to use.

It’s getting very difficult, if not impossible, to find real TSP (not substitute). I think at Home Depot last I checked there was still one authentic TSP product. And it would be only a very small amount — grains — that would be added.

Sure looks like this is the same thing... I'll have to check my garden center to read the label for any safety warnings, etc. Phosphate is readily available as an organic gardening soil amendment.

Last time I was at the feed store, it was sold by the bag. Don’t know if it is the same type though.

If you go to a feed store, you should be able to get the pure stuff. Not sure if this will get the same result, but I suspect it will.

The stuff in the pretty bag is under $1 a pound. I’d imagine phosphate goes for next to nothing out of a bulk bin or barrel.

They have reduced the amount in laundry detergent a long time ago.

If you buy the really cheap Mexican Laundry Detergent, it is still at full power.

Yes, you can use TSP. But not Spic ‘n’ Span, they took the TSP out.

Maybe we can use fertilizer, if it has phosphates in it. In the dishwasher. haha.

I can see organized crime in these nanny states now dealing in bootleg dishwasher detergent, high flow toilets, incandescent light bulbs and cigarettes instead of illicit drugs.
