BREMERTON, Wash.
Washington and Oregon are banning the sale of phosphate-laden dishwasher detergent starting Thursday.
The Kitsap Sun reports that familiar brands are still available but they will have lower levels of phosphates.
Experts say phosphates promote plant growth and may degrade water quality in lakes and streams.
The ban has already been in place in Spokane and Whatcom counties in Washington state since 2008. Some shoppers in Spokane had been crossing into Idaho to buy the older soaps.

I just wanted to add another thing-
Glass Magic can be spendy. The recommended amount is 4 tablespoons per dishwasher run, but I have noticed it works just as well with 2 tablespoons.
No phosphates, no buy!!
Buy the box that says TriSodiumPhospate on the label.
Do you know the brand name or company on the box?
We need as much info as we can, living in liberal environazi land.
I live right on the Sound. The best thing the government could do is to install sewage lines to prevent runoff into the Sound. I have a septic system, and I have paid thousands of dollars into it. I would rather have a sewer line, and pay the fee, it would be cheaper in the long run.
Instead, they ban phosphates.
Just read the lable, the real stuff says TriSodiumPhospate in plain sight on the box.
The phony Has a big TSP for a lable on the box.
Kids don't try this at home, I think.
I actually use Fleet as a phosphate fertilizer in my planted fish tanks but not at lot about 1 ml every month or so, too much and it's algae city. I also run pressurized CO2 into them.
The stuff I have is SAVOGRAN Trisodium Phosphate “All-purpose Heavy duty cleaner”.. “original deck and siding cleaner” yada, yada, yada. I use about half a teaspoon divided between the two soap cups in my cheap dishwasher plus the Cascade. Just went and bought Two 5 pound boxes at Lowes for about 20 buck’s, look in the paint dept. Piss on ALL ecofreaks and sniveling lib’s..
Seattle and Portland have banned soap. Oh, the irony...
"It was.....Soap Poisoning!"
Thanks a lot for the tip!
Thank you- what section of Lowes is it at?
Never mind- paint- got it! Thanks!
I think you jest, but you’re not far off the mark. They did this on the east side of WA state quite a while back. It was also a “stealth” campaign...went in the grocery store one day and the shelves were cleared. They didn’t even have the crappy “legal” stuff to replace the good stuff because it was enacted so quickly. What? Did I wake up in Russia?
The second phase is what I tell my kids are the “unintended consequences”. We have hard water in this area, so the dishes come out cloudy and ... well.... gross. So, what do people do? Usually, one of three things: 1) Crank up the heat on their water heater to try to get the dishwasher to do a better job; 2) drive to a neighboring state to buy “real” dish detergent; 3) run the load twice.
So, have we made a net gain, environmentalists? I think not.
