House Minority Whip Eric Cantor has asked the ethics committee to greenlight a national book tour this August for a new GOP manifesto hes co-authoring with two younger members of Congress, according to sources familiar with the situation.
This is classic Cantor: a hyperambitious move to publish and push ideas he thinks will help rebrand the GOP, on his terms and not necessarily those of his boss, Minority Leader John Boehner.
If this were an isolated incident, it would pass without a peep. But its not: Cantor is earning a reputation for pushing his ideas so hard and so often that some GOP colleagues are questioning his motives. Is he guided by a burning desire to help the party or to boost himself?

Yes, Cantor is an ambitious guy LIKE ALL POLITICIANS are ambitious guys (and gals). I don't remember Politico ever writing a story about Steny Hoyer's ambitions upsetting Nancy Pelosi. Could it be that Politico is uncomfortable with a Jew becoming a leader in the GOP?
Cantor wants to run for either the Senate or Governor, and maybe even higher later. I’ve been very disappointed in him lately since he seems to have misplaced his spine, but if he has some good Conservative ideas and can get away from weak, limp-wristed Boehner, then more the power to him.
I don’t have any blind trust in any of them.....Politico in particular...lol. Cantor is an opportunist that needs to be watched closely. Boehner has done a pretty good job whipping the republicans into voting against most of Obama’s major marxist plans..so he deserves some credit for that....but both bear watching. Our leaders are pretty good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
No, his dream job is to be Speaker first.
Don’t think so——running for re-election every two years is a pain-in-the-butt. I think he’s setting his sights higher, and probably looking at Webb or Warner in the coming years.
Boehner can't fire him.....his constituents are his boss.
Politico sucks.
Boehner talks a pretty good game as a minority opposition leader, but in my opinion he was horrible as the majority leader when the republicans controlled Congress; a big-spending, big-government gladhander. I don’t trust him a bit to stand up for conservative principles when the rubber really hits the road.
the question should be are his ideas good or bad, not how ambitious he is or what motivates him.
Let’s just hope we can get someone else as leader if we win back Congress. Mike Pence is who I’d like to see as leader.
Sorry, Corin in right. Cantor has made it quite clear on numerous occasions that he wants to be Speaker.
We’ll see.
Yes. Yes, he is.
For one thing, there are too many others lined up for the statewide slots. He'd have to contend with any combination of Bolling, Cuccinelli, McDonnell, Allen and maybe Forbes.
For another, like iceskater said, he wants to be Speaker. That's been quite clear for some time.
Consider the source Politico, nuff said
