But an indefinite power of taxation in the latter might, and probably would in time, deprive the former of the means of providing for their own necessities and would subject them entirely to the mercy of the national legislature. Seems like reality would prove Hamilton's argument against this statement to be false.

It is indeed. One of the great things about American system of government is the maintenance of freedom, specifically, the freedom of government at every level to tax the citizen until his eyes bleed. ;-)
