That panel today was one of the BEST I have seen on sunday am...
It was very interesting. The one guy, Tom Ricks (who lived there as a child), was very interesting in his take on the Afghan population. However at the very end of the discussion his assessment was that the only way to avoid dealing with problems in the ME is to convert to alternative sources of energy.
Junger (sp?), writer who has imbed with the troops, reminded the panel that even though the number of Afghanis killed during our involvement is high, it did not begin to compare to those killed by the Taliban. Leaving Afghanistan to the Taliban would be a huminitarian disaster, and AlQueida would be back.
Wes Moore (in Afghanistan from 2005-2006, I think) pointed out how the Afghanis do not even comprehend the geography of their own country. When they were shown a map of Afghanistan, they did not know what it was. IOW, they are very tribal and seperated into their local regions.
Quite interesting, over all.

From what I have read about Afghanistan it seems every ten years or so they get new rulers.
Locals are either threatened with imminent death if they don't obey the new rulers or given a little bit of cash to obey or a bit of both.
After a while philosophy gives way to imminent threats of life or death 24/7. Must be a terrible existence.
