If I remember my Russian history, the people that got blamed for the famine in the Ukraine were the kulaks, basically peasants that refused to get their minds right and move on to the collective farms and wanted to stay on their own plots of land. Those people were persecuted mercilessly by Stalin and his band of evil-doers.

Setting aside Joe Stalin for (just) a moment - I just want to comment on the fact that the week started with rumors that Obama was going to swap out Biden and Hillary Clinton. I laughed quite hard when I fist saw that story. You could die trying to assume whence that one came, but it took only about 5-6 days for Biden to perform another gaffe and make it perfectly obvious what an error it would be to move him to Foggy Bottom.

Not that I think Hillary is doing a good job, in fact she is forking up royally, but Biden, for the obvious reason would be as world-class disaster as our top diplomat.

Actually, massive amounts of grain were produced in the Ukraine back then. It’s just that all of it was removed and sent elsewhere with nothing given in return to the farmers and locals.

Yes, the Bolsheviks blamed the kulaks, but most of them died of starvation anyway. Placing blame on the kulaks was indirectly blaming the former system (Czarist) that the kulaks wished had persisted.

My grandparents were kulaks who fled Ukraine back in 1920 and legally immigrated to the U.S. in 1922. Had they stayed, they would have died in the forced collectivization/ starvation of the 30’s.
