It took Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman less than two weeks to hang up her hard line on immigration and to go on Spanish-language TV catering to the Latino vote.
It was but one step toward middle ground for a candidate pulled right in the primary.
Forget that endorsement from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and those robo calls from former Vice President Dick Cheney.
And don't expect to hear any more from former Gov. Pete Wilson, who pleased GOP voters in the Republican primary when he said Whitman would be "tough as nails on illegal immigration," but who is considered a liability on that topic in a general election in which fewer than a third of voters are registered Republican.
"Trust me, you will not hear from any of them," said Tony Quinn, a political analyst and former Republican legislative aide.
For candidates who stake out too liberal or too conservative turf too starkly in partisan primaries, shifting back in a general election to gain broader appeal can be difficult. Polls showed that Whitman's primary election opponent, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, would have had trouble attracting moderate voters against Democrat Jerry Brown in November.
Yet Whitman, though she battled Poizner in a flood of TV ads about who was more conservative, did so largely in generalities, and on specific issues she did not go so far.
"She certainly didn't go so far as to reach the point of no return,"

Move to the center? You mean she’s running a more conservative campaign?
Whitman is a troll.
No surprise here. Another Republican candidate trying to be all things to all people - and probably losing to a Democrat. This ‘moderate/centrist’ garbage is why we’ll always have RINOs. When will they ever learn? Probably never.
We never stand a chance. From the second a campaign season begins we are fed some fat face of some idiot power hungry schmuck, and never even get a chance to know if there are any true conservatives with decent values and visions even out there. Hacks and schmucks. Take your pick.
Her arrogant voice for the next decade or Moonbeam’s wacked one.
G*d Dammit!
We don’t need this bull$h!t...
” Another Republican “?
Meg is no more a Republican than is the Mayor of N.Y.
RINO turds? Definately
That is how it seems.
So Whitman trotted out ol' Pete from the home, huh? Like I'm going to believe anything he says. This is the man who once called Ronald Reagan "the worst governor in the history of the state."
Schwarzenegger in a skirt.
This is the newspaper who had a head editorial writer call California Voters worse than fools for voting down a tax increase bill in the last election cycle. Consequently, if they say a GOP candidate is moving to the center they will try to characterize it as badly as is possible while a Democrat doing the same from the left would be lauded in the strongest terms.
I'm looking for Jerry Brown to be lauded as the savior of California if those pesky voters will just allow the real, true genius of him to shine forth. /sarc
Here we go. Same old RINO routine. These are the people we want to win in November? Tweedle Dum, Tweedle Dee.
Whitman's radio ad about ILLEGAL immigration stated that she was against amnesty -- she DID NOT say that she was against legalization.
Whitman's radio ad said that illegal immigrants had no right to expect public-supported assistance. --- she DID NOT say that they should not receive welfare benefits.
Lady Schwarzenkennedy v. Moonbeam.. California!
She already was in the middle. Now she’s moving left.
Jerry Brown - the clown responsible for unions in government and partly what has bankrupted CA. And how is CA supposed to improve under Moonbeam’s leadership?

Obama is planning on bailing out CA, by the way.
She moved to the center and found her butt.
Are there really so many new Californians that don’t remember this?

I’m not a fan of Whitman, but come on, we’ve been through Brown before....
Another deeply “principled” RINO!!!
