If the Jones act is repealed it would shut down every commercial shipbuilding yard in the US. We have few enough anyway, but it would also put all of our seaman out of a job..few of them anyway. Union or not. Every commercial fishing boat would be built overseas and manned by foreigners. It is a protectionest act, but it has been the only thing that has preserved the tattered remnants of our commercial shipping and fishing industry.
I spent part of my career as a supplier to the US and Foreign shipbuilding industry..so I know the issue and what has been done over the years to by pass it(like the big trawler processors “converted” in Europe).
In spite of being a freetrader..I would not vote to repeal the Jones Act, or vote for anyone who did.

I know the Jones Act pretty well, too. No one can explain how USS/GLF was sold to the Canadians but it did happen.
I was GM/Sales Mgr for a Great Lakes bunkering business for 16 years. From my experience, the only reason the US has a fleet of ships and American sailors in this part of the world is the Jones Act.
We owned a 149 foot, 8,000 bbl tanker in Duluth/Superior and did seven to ten fuelings a week for the 40 week season. At the time there were 60 American and 60 Canadian boats, plus eight or ten Salties that I could service. The number is reduced from ten years ago.
We made blends of fuel via inline blending on the tanker and could make any Euro spec by using combinations of supplies.
The Laker sailors are some of the best. They make a port every few days.
