Landau: We will defend gas fields

Israel is ready to defend with force the recently discovered natural gas fields off its Mediterranean coast, said Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau (Israel Beiteinu) in an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday.

“We will not hesitate to use our force and strength to protect not only the rule of law but the international maritime law,” Landau was quoted as saying.

Landau made his comments in reaction to the declaration of Lebanon's Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, that the part of the gas field lies within Lebanon's territorial waters.

He continued, “Whatever we find, they will have something to say. That’s because they’re not challenging our findings and so-called occupation of the sea. Our very existence here is a matter of occupation for them. These areas are within the economic waters of Israel.”

A consortium led by billionaire Yitzhak Tshuva announced June 3 that it had struck natural gas in a field called 'Leviathan' off the coast of Israel.

Huzzah for the Israelis!

Though they did ruin the old joke:

“Moses led us to the one place in the middle east that has no oil in it”..:D

"how does it work by law"

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Israel could also run into a dispute with Cyprus.

Similar problems exist between Britain and Argentina(and Chile), just as ther are problems between Russia, Canada, and Denmark(Greenland), just as there are problems between China and Viet Nam.

So we will have a war soon? Turkey claims the North Cyprus (not recognized) area so there you have it.

If Hamas and Hezbollah rockets can reach the offshore drilling platforms, it’s over. And I doubt they care about the environment.

All these conflicts about oil and gas are just rhetoric. All disputes will eventually be solved by UNCLOS.

The rhetoric between Israel and Lebanon is about a small indention in the dividing line.

As for Israel and Cyprus, neither will have a 200 mile exclusive economic zone, but an EEZ of about 148 miles. This is no different from US-Cuba in the Florida straits or US-Russia in the Bering straits. Except those dividing lines were determined by the Magnussen Act in the 1970s.

On the other hand, the Turkish ship headed for Gaza when it was boarded by Israel was not in international waters, it was within the Turkish EEZ.

Even though he had to give up Cloud City to Vader and the Empire, Landau said he would draw the line at the Gas Fields.
