Was McCrystal simply relieved of command or has he retired from the military?

Not much detail yet but the report is he has been relieved of his command. I suspect the Petraus appointment is a temporary patch to gain some breathing space until SecDef and the White House can properly vet the likely replacements and make a suitable selection.

At this point, what happens to General McCrystal becomes a personnel assignment matter for SecDef. Just what do you do with a relieved 4 star Army general who no longer enjoys the CIC’s confidence?

In normal times, the usal course is to request retirement. But these are not normal times and McCrystal is still a top expert in unconventional warfare/SpecOps.

I want to know that, too, as I am reading “he was fired” in some accounts. Would this mean dishonorable discharge, and he won’t get his pension? Just curious. Also, all the Generals and officers should resign...sort of, “what if they gave a war and nobody came.” When I read on some blogs that a revolution is coming, it worries me that there might be a military coup coming with it.
