They put the containment module on hold, and tried the "top kill." When that failed, they then turned back to containment. BP regularly acknowledges none of this has been done in waters deeper than 5,000 feet.

It appears the best hope is in the relief wells. It doesn't appear stuffing the hole with anything right now is an option.
