National Latino Family Expo will offer free services and showcase Texas culture

San Antonio, TX—Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR (National Council of La Raza), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, today announced the preliminary roster of speakers and the extensive, free family activities that will be at the 2010 NCLR Annual Conference. Sponsored by Toyota, the Conference, themed “A Legacy of Service, Advancing Community,” will be held July 10–13 in San Antonio, Texas.

Mayor Julián Castro of San Antonio will be among several prominent Texans from government, business, and academia who will address the Conference. Governor Rick Perry, Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White, CityView Executive Chairman Henry Cisneros, Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Texas State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer, renowned entrepreneur, author, artist, and philanthropist Lionel Sosa and community, business leader Frank Herrera, and San Antonio Director of Health Dr. Fernando Guerra are also scheduled to attend.

“We are excited to be returning to San Antonio, the site of NCLR’s 1981 Annual Conference. Not only will this year’s Conference provide participants with a wide variety of perspectives on the key issues that our community faces, but families will also be able to enjoy free cultural activities,” Murguía said.

A partial list of national leaders and honorees scheduled to address Conference attendees include:

•U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D–NJ), City of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Minority Health Dr. Garth Graham, UNCF CEO Michael Lomax, Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Patrick Corvington, NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez, PolicyLink Founder and CEO Angela Glover Blackwell, U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn H. Ali, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Administrator of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Lisa Pino, Toyota Motor North America, Inc. President and COO Yoshimi Inaba, and President, Mary Kay Henry, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) •Retired Air Force Brigadier General Belisario Flores and U.S. Marine Corps Major General Angela Salinas, baseball hero Carlos Delgado, and Telemundo journalist Lori Montenegro There will also be a “Heroes and Heritage” awards presentation, which is a special salute to military veterans.

Texas will have a starring role at the revamped 2010 National Latino Family Expo, a free companion event to the more than 50 workshops that will be held at Conference. UPS is the Title Sponsor of the 2010 National Latino Family Expo. In addition to a Home Rescue Fair for struggling homeowners and a Citizenship and Immigration Assistance Session, the National Latino Family Expo will have more than 200 exhibitors and attractions that appeal to all generations at each of its seven themed Pavilions: Community/El Barrio, Culture and History/El Museo, Health and Fitness/Tu Salud, Technology and Environment/El Futuro, NCLR Family/Familia, TejanoExperience USA FanFare, and Career/Tus Oportunidades. Free transportation service will be provided from the Crossroads Mall and Madla Transit Center to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Monday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Below are some highlights of the 2010 NCLR Annual Conference:

Saturday, July 10

•National Latino Family Expo ribbon-cutting ceremony with Dora the Explorer, celebrating Dora’s tenth birthday •Citizenship and Immigration Assistance Session to help eligible legal permanent residents fill out their citizenship applications •A town hall titled “Educating Our Way Out of the Economic Crisis: Everyone College-Ready” •Speakers including Rick Perry, Julián Castro, Robert Menendez, and Patrick Corvington Sunday, July 11

•A Home Rescue Fair combining pro bono legal advice, housing counseling, and loan negotiation services to assist families struggling to keep up with their mortgage payments •A health town hall titled “Childhood Obesity Among Latinos: A Call for Action” where panelists will offer insights into the profound effects of childhood obesity on our society •A panel of distinguished Latina authors, including Deborah Deras, Consuelo Kickbusch, Miriam Muley, and Deborah Rosado Shaw, moderated by Maria Hinojosa Monday, July 12

•Speakers including Bill White and Henry Cisneros •A town hall focusing on the economic crisis titled “What’s the Holdup? Strategies to Jump-Start a Stalled Economy,” including Shaun Donovan, Julián Castro, and Angela Glover Blackwell as panelists, moderated by Julie Stav Tuesday, July 13

•A tribute to the armed forces with the theme “A Legacy of American Heroes,” featuring Hilda Solis, Leticia Van de Putte, Belisario Flores, and Angela Salinas

I take it Cisneros is going to give a seminar on how to lie to the FBI and commit perjury and bank fraud, in order to pay off one’s mistress, and end up with only a misdemeanor conviction.
