Tim Scott, a charismatic member of the South Carolina state House of Representatives, soundly defeated Paul Thurmond in the GOP runoff for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District. Thurmond is the son of South Carolina's legendary late Sen. Strom Thurmond. Scott won the runoff 69 percent to 31 percent.

Earlier this month, Scott won the most votes in the nine-candidate GOP field that also included Carroll Campbell, son of the state's late Gov. Carroll Campbell. On Monday, Sarah Palin gave Scott's campaign a huge bump when she endorsed him for Congress.

Tim Scott on Illegal Immigration:

South Carolina has been hit particularly hard by illegal immigration. Each year, we spend more than $186 million to educate, provide medical care, and incarcerate illegal aliens. Washington has failed to deal with the immigration problem, leaving the States to fend for themselves. That is why Tim Scott has sponsored immigration legislation that is modeled after the Arizona law.

Tim Scott on Social Issues:

Tim Scott lives his South Carolina values – hard work, religious faith, and giving back to the community – and has inspired others to do the same.

A proud member of the NRA, Tim supports the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, and to defend themselves, their family and their property. Tim will protect our Second Amendment rights, which he believes is a fundamental freedom and a cornerstone of our democracy.

Tim Scott believes in the sanctity of traditional marriage between a man and a woman and opposes gay marriage.

Tim believes that a society is ultimately judged by how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable members. That is why he is 100% pro-life and opposes euthanasia and assisted suicide, as well as the non-consensual withholding of care because of disability, age, or infirmity. Tim will fight for the rights of the unborn, and will resist government funding for abortions.

Tim supports adult and cord blood stem cell research, but he opposes the use of taxpayer dollars for research on human embryos. He supports a ban on human cloning and on creation of human embryos solely for experimentation.

Tim has led the charge in standing up to the federal government when it intrudes on the rights of South Carolina. He believes that the Tenth Amendment is there for a reason, and that it means what it says – the States and the people should control their own destinies, not the federal government. Every time the federal government ignores its constitutional limits with restrictive new mandates, the freedom of the citizens is eroded.

Tim Scott on Fiscal Restraint:

Americans are fed up with wasteful government spending. When a family or a small business is struggling, they tighten their belts and cut back on spending; but when our federal government sees a financial crisis, they use it as an excuse to vastly increase spending, and create new burdensome programs and entitlements!

Tim Scott will bring common sense back to Washington. He will fight waste, frivolous “pork” spending, and the unconstitutional overreach of the federal government.

Time and time again, Tim has reduced government spending, and shrunk the size of the county budget, leaving more money for the taxpayers. We can trust Tim to bring fiscal discipline to Washington because he has successfully done it in South Carolina.
