Tim Scott is almost guaranteed to win. The district was helped by the creation of a minority majority district that stretches from the black precincts in Charleston through the so-called black belt of the state to the black precincts in Columbia. As a result, the 1st C.D. has only 20 percent black voters and votes strongly Republican. The nominee of the Democratic Party is a perennial candidate who won the nomination of his party on the basis of his pigmentation. The person who was supposed to get the nomination had a strong resume of public service. Unfortunately, for the Democrats, he was too pale to appeal to the base of the S.C. Democratic Party. We in the Republican Party may vote for the best man (or woman), but for many people in the other party, it’s all about skin color.
This is the district Mark Sanford represented when he was in Congress. Last three reps in Congress (spanning 3 decades) have been R. Scott should have little trouble winning.
We really kicked butt in SC today. Awesome.
Thank you both for the information. I am glad that the Republican is going to win this.
Thanks for posting. Congratulations Tim Scott!
Man, I wish I could be in Tim Scott’s district - as it stands now I’m in Jim Clyburn’s district. What a bummer...
My husband went to high school with Mr. Scott. He says he’s a “good guy.” I hope he wins.
Bet the Congressional Black Caucus refuses to admit him.
He might take the cue of JC Watts and choose not to join.
Great news!
Thanks for the ping!
Bump!!
I’ve met Tim Scott several times over the years. He served on CHarleston County Council with my former next door neighbor, and he is truly a great guy. Even Jim DeMint sings his praises regarding his disdain for earmarks. He will be a great Congressman.
It's the "conservative backlash" effect.
.
( By the way, I love Palin. )
“Its a Republican district.”
Good golly, in a racist district. What has happened to the South? It must be all those liberals coming down from up north. NOT.
Tim Scott won’t be the first Black Republican to represent that area, either. The GOP was well ahead of the curve on that, having sent a few back in the late 1800s. It took until a grotesque gerrymander in 1992 to send that racist buffoon from the 6th, Jim Clyburn, to be the first Black Dem Congressman from SC. Scott didn’t need a racist gerrymander to get him in office.
Indeed, but Haley’s was the biggest news of all and her spring to the front of the finish line was most definitely due to Palin’s push.
That’s interesting. To be honest, I have found racist sentiments to be far more prevalent in the circles of “enlightened” people who voted for Obama, than I do in Tea Partiers...the principles resurging in the conservative movement know no color. :)
I thought race wasn’t an issue?
“It took until a grotesque gerrymander in 1992 to send that racist buffoon from the 6th, Jim Clyburn,”
Quite an understatement IMHO. Classy though since I would have called him a racist Ahole.
I'd bet you are right. Not that it's a bad thing for Mr. Scott, and I hope the CBC doesn't ask him to join.
