"McChrystal knew what he was doing. "

Does not look like it to me. In fact, I find it pathetic that he now extends a profound apology. Either don't do it or stick to your guns. This was more like a dog barking from behind a wall. Don't forget also that he had voted for Obama and said today that he has "admiration" for him. That did not have to be a part of apology, certainly if he wanted to "out" Obama as you suggest.

Looks more like a cheep hot-shot behavior of a general who acted like a tsar in his neck of the woods, thinking himself superior to everyone in sight, and simply forgot his limits. Now that he was reminded of what he actually is, he begs forgiveness.

In one sense I agree with your point, but you have to remember McChrystal is a career military man, who probably has over 30 years in and an O-9 pension. The UCMJ has an article prohibiting military members from making disparaging remarks about any elected officials. I remember this because I was a lowly reservist during the Clinton years and we were always reminded of this.

Do you remember under Clinton all the retired flag officers who would openly criticize policy and the president? Once they're retired they're safe, they have their pension. I know myself I wouldn't want to face a court martial after a lifetime career then have my pension yanked out from under me. I think that's why he did the apology and firing of the aide, to try and prevent being brought up on a UCMJ violation. I have no proof of this, but in his shoes, I might do that.

IMHO given the fact that McChrystal is still an active in theater commander, what he did shows great courage.
