[Gen.] Stanley McChrystal launches attack on White House over Afghanistan

Tensions between the White House and the US military have been brought into the open in a blistering attack on the U.S administration by the commander of U.S and Nato forces in Afghanistan.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, General Stanley McChrystal, who clashed with the US administration over his demands for more troops to Afghanistan, mocked the vice president and denounced the US ambassador to Kabul.

His aides were also less than flattering about President Barack Obama and frequently derided top civilian leaders including special envoy Richard Holbrooke. One anonymous aide calls White House national security adviser James Jones ‘a clown.’

In the interview Gen McChrystal, who has made it clear he believes the campaign in Afghanistan is failing, cracked jokes about vice president Joe Biden and accused the man the White house chose to be his diplomatic partner, ambassador Karl Eikenberry of ‘betraying’ him in a White House debate over war strategy last year.

Asked about Mr Biden, a known sceptic of the commander’s strategy in Afghanistan, General McChrystal says, laughing: “Are you asking about Vice President Biden? who’s that?”

One of his senior advisers adds: “Biden? did you say: Bite Me?”

Gen Chrystal tells the magazine he felt “betrayed” by Mr Eikenberry in a White House debate over the US campaign in Afghanistan..

Referring to a leaked internal memo from Mr Eikenberry that questioned his request for more troops, the commander suggested the ambassador had tried to protect himself for history’s sake.

“I like Karl, I’ve known him for years, but they’d never said anything like that to us before,” General McChrystal tells the magazine.

“Here’s one that covers his flank for the history books. Now if we fail, they can say, I told you so.’”

Mr Eikenberry, himself a former commander in Afghanisan, had written

It’s time to impeach the left’s fake “messiah”. He’s too incompetent. The POTUS job is for adults. Children of the World should stick to doing whatever it is that Children of the World do.

Is the ban on troops being allowed to have “chambered rounds” still in effect?

McChrystal Apologies for Incendiary Article

By now, you’ve probably heard about the upcoming Rolling Stone profile of General Stanley McChrystal: The one in which the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan says he felt “betrayed” by his civilian partner American ambassador Karl Eikenberry; the one in which McChrystal’s aides diss the Commander-in-Chief, call the National Security Advisor a “clown,” and make fun of Vice President “Bite me.”

Apparently, that piece didn’t turn out how McChrystal and his guys envisioned it would. McChrystal is apologizing for the article before it’s even come out. He says in a statement: “I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened. Throughout my career, I have lived by the principles of personal honor and professional integrity. What is reflected in this article falls far short of that standard. I have enormous respect and admiration for President Obama and his national security team, and for the civilian leaders and troops fighting this war and I remain committed to ensuring its successful outcome.”

That's all true enough, but it is also obviously time for McChrystal to offer his ethical resignation. He has no business trying to carry on given this vote of no confidence in his superiors.

It’s not incompetence, it’s intent. But, it’s good to hear of possible resistance in the military. If so, McChrystal’s got balls because he’s risking his career.

Question? Why is McChrystal talking to Rolling STone and why would he even say these things if he didnt believe it. This is going to get interesting to say the least.

I'm familiar with his inane Taliban favoring ROE - including the latest - 'restraint' when shot at - but not allowed to have 'chambered rounds"???

Do you have a link?

if so, the CICINO should be tried for treason.

He should have resigned instead of going to the press.

By not doing so he put himself in a position to be called by the Pres he does not like and asked to apologize.

How humiliating.

For General McChrystal to come out in public and say this about the President things must really be bad. It is most likely a career ending move.

Maybe him going to press is intentional? He is telling us something we need to listen. However, the apology is humiliating but maybe he is taking a bullet.

Hoo Boy...

There is a serious melt down happening with the wars, the gulf and the economy.

I have no doubt that at the end of it all we will find more racial tension to boot.

This guy is ****ed up like a soup sandwich.

Depending of the gravity of the offense, it could also call for a Court Martial. If General McChrystal wished to publicly criticize the president he should have first resigned. Civil control of the military in the United States is precious gift that we should not take lightly.
