Queens Congressman Gregory Meeks says his failure to disclose $55,000 in personal loans he obtained over the past three years is an "oversight."
Sunday's Daily News revealed the Queens Democrat had failed to list on public financial disclosure statements a $40,000 "personal loan" he got in 2007 and one for $15,000 he got in 2008. In a statement to The News, he refused to describe what the loans were for, or their terms and conditions. He also was vague about why he suddenly confirmed the existence of the loans, saying only that he had personally ordered up a "careful and detailed review" of his finances.
"The review was conducted, at my direction, to ensure that I am in full compliance with all financial disclosure requirements of the U.S. House of Representatives," he wrote. "I failed to disclose my membership in two nonprofit boards and two personal financial liabilities.
"I regret these oversights and take full responsibility for them," he added. "I want to assure my colleagues and my constituents that I have created internal procedures to help avoid such oversights in the future."
The revelation surfaced after The News inquired about Meeks' most recent filing.
That report, filed a month after its May 15 due date, showed Meeks has a "personal loan" worth $50,000 to $100,000 with Queens businessman Ed Ahmad.
Ahmad owns several companies, including one that sells construction supplies and home appliances. He did not return calls yesterday. A source said the loans are related to Meeks' $830,000 home in Jamaica, Queens, built for him by developer Richard Dennis. Dennis did not return calls seeking comment.
Manhattan federal prosecutors have subpoenaed documents related to Meeks' house, as well as his sponsorship of several nonprofits based in Queens.
Money meant for Katrina victims disappeared into his pocket as well.

Queens congressman, King Gregory Meeks. Anothe anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-American, anti-life member of The Democrat Crime Syndicate.
Absolutely right! When an average person takes responsibility for a criminal act they’re punished, it’s a different story with Dem pols and appointed officials.
When its a dem the media call it “oversight.” When it’s a Republican, it’s the “culture of corruption.”
