The Nixon era Republicans thought that the Latinos would counterbalance the African-Americans by becoming Republicans. (The Karl Rove Theory) What were they smoking?

Because they were thinking of Cuban legal immigrants instead of Mexican and Central American illegal immigrants?

That and Rove thought Hispanics being so-called social conservatives could be won if the GOP pandered to them. The whole problem Hispanics would rather get a big government check.
