Santorum: The Darkest Horse ("Palin is the only endorsement anyone wants!")
National Review Online ^ | June 17, 2010 | Robert Costa

Posted on 06/17/2010 5:51:53 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

After Rick Santorum lost his Senate seat in 2006, he was, to many, a political dead man. Not only did he lose, but he lost big — by 18 points — to Democrat Bob Casey. Statistically, it was the worst loss for a sitting senator since Ronald Reagan’s first term. So, when Santorum travels to Iowa and New Hampshire these days as a possible 2012 presidential candidate, he’s a dark horse only Anna Sewell could love.

(snip)

Santorum, however, doesn’t play coy when I ask him about what his endorsement means to a fellow Republican, if anything. “Palin is the only endorsement anyone wants,” he laughs. “If you ask who the most influential endorsers are, Palin is numbers one, two, and three, with maybe Sen. Jim DeMint at four. Her endorsement is the only one that matters this year. Just look at what she did for Nikki Haley.”

What about Romney, the man Santorum supported in the 2008 presidential campaign? “No offense to Mitt, but he doesn’t carry the weight,” Santorum says. “Mitt can help you with some finance people, maybe in some small way, but his pull is insignificant compared to Palin’s.”

How about Christie (NJ gov). That guy is one “no bullshit here” politician. I used to be favorable to Jindal, but his performance with the BP spill has sort of diluted my enthusiasm. He should have called out the Louisiana National Guard and started building his sand berms at the first crack out of the box, instead of bitching and speechifying about it. Worry about how to pay for it LATER.

Unfortunately, at least at the moment, it is obviously true. It is primarily due to the cult of celebrity which has infected both liberals and conservatives alike.

I generally agree with you, ‘cept on politics and communications it’s pretty clear by now—Palin should be Santorum’s mentor if anything.

Yeah, would have NOTHING to do with direct experience:

- being twice elected to a small town city council,

- being twice elected as mayor of a small town,

- then being elected governor of the largest energy-producing state in the country,

- becoming a self-made millionaire

- being hired by the most-watched cable news channel

- being the most sought after political endorsement

- diverting the attention of the White House and the national media with a mere Facebook posting.

- being the most hated/feared individual by your ideological enemies.

Yeah, it's simply ignorant people infected by the "cult of personality."

The reality is that she only has 2 1/2 years experience as governor of one of the least populous states in the union. Oh, as you pointed out, she has a bit more experience in a very small town.

Hear wealth and power of political endorsements are due to the cult of celebrity. It worked for Obama, it might work for Palin. Ignorance is everywhere these days.

Amen. A cult of personality is exactly what suurrounds her, and it's an epidemic here on FR. I like Palin but wouldn't vote for her in a primary. She appeals to about 30% of the electorate...and they are bonkers for her. The problem is that there's a whole lot of people on the other side of the spectrum and many, many of them are rank and file Republicans, who feel just as strongly against her.

Some things Santorum understands amazingly well, while other, simpler things seem to blow past him in a flash.

At least he gets it on this one.

Their “coaching” is exactly what Palin doesn’t need.

She is a born giant killer. - For her entire political existence she has been cutting Goliaths off at the knees with a shoestring budget.

That’s why they’re all scared of her; she seems to have a Solomon-like pipeline to what needs to be said at just the right moment.

You forgot to add...”and stuck it to Obama and his Administration by showing what real leadership is.”

That's just the point; the BP failure has revealed others failures, among them, both Obama and Jindal.

The so called feckless “men” in the GOP are utterly worthless, wimps, and completely not up to the task to take on Obama.

Sarah is the only one with guts to do so.

If she runs I am behind her 100000%, financially, time wise, etc.

Whoever comes closest to my core principles and values and has a chance to beat obama. I was hoping Mitch Daniels would run then read his ‘truce’ comments and gave up hope for him. As of right now there’s nobody on the scene who fits the bill.

The Sarah haters are mostly a group of malcontents who consistently name people only known by .00005% of the population like Hunter, etc.

and please spare me the Huck nonsense.

For me, its Sarah, Thune, or someone else or bust.
