ESPN: North Korean Fans Are ‘Handpicked Chinese Actors’(with video)
Three Figners of Politics ^ | June 15th, 2010 | Stupac

The paranoia of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il seems to know no bounds. Case in point – in Brazil’s 2-1 win over North Korea today, ESPN analyst Martin Tyler made a rather odd observation.

Tyler claimed that a rather rambunctious group that appeared to be North Koreans, weren’t actually North Koreans, but rather “handpicked Chinese Actors.” Reports have said these “fans” were Chinese actors, acting on behalf of China as a way to support its long-time ally. Roughly 1,000 Chinese citizens, “including musicians and actors, to cheer for the North Koreans,” the report said.

They were conspicuously missing from the North Koreans match against Nigeria last Sunday. But they made it to today’s match.

One can only speculate why the North Koreans have to borrow fans, but can the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il really be so paranoid not to allow any real North Korean to come and support their own athletics teams, fearing they might want to move to South Africa?

Totally believable. All 1000 would defect if they were actual north Koreans.

Why do we not threaten China with a cut-off in trade for their continued patronage of this deranged regime? We should be asking China is North Korea can make up for the loss of US markets for all their electronic goods and other crap they sell here.

I was thinking today as Ji scored for the Norks, that this evening, somewhere in Pyongyang, his family would get to split a chicken wing for a celebratory dinner. Wouldn’t like to be in the goalkeeper’s family.

Watching teams from regimes like this is a bit chilling considering how Saddam Hussein’s son reacted to mistakes by Iraqi players.

...including musicians and actors...

I guess they needed the musicians to blow the noisemakers.

Remember that Colombian defender in the US-hosted World Cup in 1994? He scored an “own goal.” After the tournament, he was at a night club and was gunned down by some cartel’s hitman. Apparently the mistake cost the capo a lot of bucks.

How the heck does NK field a soccer team that manages only a 2-1 loss to Brazil?

Let me guess why not......they’re financing the functioning of our government by buying our debt. They stop buying, Dow 4,000 here we come.

Heck, if the games were held in Haiti, the NoKos would still choose to defect.

Brazilians play with other teams most of the time. Live lives and party and have families.

North Korean team members (with few exceptions) play football and practice with eachother and are told they are playing for “Dear Leader” who they have been brainwashed into loving.

Just like in 1966 technically their skills are no match for the world but in terms of discipline and motivation (love and fear?) they are amognst the top in the world. This was seen to some degree during the 2008 Olympics where the Chinese brought out men and women who literally had been training since childhood for those events.

Here is a short (5min) trailer for a documentary about their 1966 team.

For many years the Cuban security has followed their athletes around at foreign events to keep them from defecting. However, many still manage to get away.

I suspect the NK athletes are watched like hawks by their security.
