An earthquake has rocked Southern California, shaking the Los Angeles area and forcing a halt to the Toronto Blue Jays-San Diego Padres game in San Diego.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.7 quake was centered five miles southeast of Ocotillo near the U.S.-Mexico border. It struck Monday at about 9:30 PDT.

The quake was initially reported as a magnitude-5.9 temblor.

On the warnings, as long as you are preparred, ignorance is bliss. Tornado warnings are hours of scary.

But, I know what you are talking about on tornados. They are like someone rolled a big bowling ball through the countryside. Unless you are in the path, not a lot happens.

I’ve seen one side of a street taken out while homes on the other side of the street were completely untouched.

I’ll take neither, however.

I think we have our answer on the tornado vs quake debate. FReepers are so smart! I'm with you.

Oh, if one comes near you, I can’t imagine the terror.

I have heard it sounds like a freight train, your ears pop etc.

I have been through some really scary storms with big hail, very high winds etc. I still would take it over an Earthquake, but probably because I’m USED to it. I grew up with bad storms all the time.

But, not tornadoes....lots of warnings but never one that came close enough to notice. If you are close to one though, it is scary as all get out.

Obviously this was caused by the Arizona immigration law. /sarc

I’ve seen about a dozen tornadoes. Closest was about 300 feet. Luckily, I was inside and the wind wasn’t more than 80 miles per hour at the house. Scary is when the vector doesn’t change, but it just gets louder (never happened to me).

Worst one I didn’t see was less than a mile away. They were building houses where the trailer park used to be, and I guess the tornado was frustrated at not having trailers to play with. Oh, there were no building supplies on site afterwards. They found a few tiles three blocks away.

More people are killed every single year by tornadoes in the U.S. than earthquakes. This is a fact.

In modern America, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes cause the most damage and are the biggest killers.

This is not debatable, it's a fact.

Doesn’t mean much though since earthquakes don’t happen as often.

Uh, yeah, that's part of it, plus American building codes are in place...Unlike like Pakistan or Iran.

I am just saying when earthquakes happen, they have a far greater impact than a puny twister.

Wrong...Those puny twisters can occur 100 times a season more or less...The damage and death add up.

In addition, in earth quakes, one area can be affected, yet an area several miles away is not....It all depends on the geology, bedrock etc, etc. That is why ya hear some say they felt it good, while others say they felt nothing.

Once again, in modern America, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes cause the most damage and are the biggest killers. It's no secret.

Jan. 31, 1986? Remember it like it was yesterday.

I was in college at the time, at Cleveland State downtown in a 5th floor classroom. Everything just started to shake and roll for a minute, then we finished class. Then I drove my ass home to make sure the house was OK....

I was in a fairly new long two-story building on the near west side that ran east-west and you could hear the rumble quickly move from one end to the other. It sounded like a crowd of people running along the roof. The metal supports on the suspended ceilings were squeaking the whole time, maybe 10-15 seconds. Yeah, that was quite a surprise. I know someone who was in a school in Lake county and the walls in a stairwell cracked.

I live in NEBRASKA! I know something about tornadoes... I did not say they were a force to ignore... but they are a hell of a lot more easy to escape from than when the whole dang earth starts rocking, rolling and doing the jitterbug!

The great thing about natural disasters is we get to pick which ones we want to deal with.

With tornados, I've never viewed them as something you can escape. I've always thought you kind of just crawl down in the basement then sit there and hope.
