The overall shift appears driven by birth rates and immigration, not white flight to private schools. There is no precise number of students attending private and parochial schools in Texas, but the conflicting estimates dont show any big increase in recent years.
The National Center for Educational Statistics reports 296,000 Texas children attended private and parochial schools in 2007-08, with most enrolled in Catholic schools. About 80,000 children are in Catholic schools this year, 43 percent of them white and 41 percent Hispanic, said Margaret McGettrick, director of education for the Texas Catholic Conference.
The Oregon-based National Home Education Research Institute estimated at least 210,000 Texas kids were being taught at home in 2008-09 but had no demographic information on them.
