Here's a dose of reality.
The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The Post yesterday that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.
Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago.
"The show might be about family, it might be about Abigail's trip. It's something that was shopped around," he said.

” So they rolled the dice with her life, to gain the fame.”
Yep. That is sick!
I stand corrected. Thanks again.
Thus probably making most of those like my cousin upper middle class in assets....
Used to be a company in WestLake Village called RayPak....that I did business with...way back when.
Cheers!
” From the comments section: The Sunderland home is very modest. I can comment on the neighborhood because I live in it myself. The situation is such that a significant number of the homes have 3-4 families living in them. Yea, it is that type of neighborhood.”
There is a postage stamp sized section of Thousand Oaks called “old town”, where mostly Mexicans live. That must be it
Homes in Thousand Oaks range from 500,000 to 6 million.
Trash is trash, what does home schooling have to do with it except to have complete brain washing control in this case.
” Used to be a company in WestLake Village called RayPak.”
Still should be there. At least it was for 25 or more years ;-)
Thanks. I’ve never been there but always thought it was upper middle class. Guess not all of it is.
I'm sure she is being well cared for. They will all be gentlemen ~
Well for me about 250 thousand and a suite on the QE 2
i bet she gets frenched kissed
” Thanks for more input, but the other genius stephenjohnbanker is the one that needs to know this.”
See post 61, where I clearly admit I was wrong, then read post 64.
By the way, Wayne Gretsky’s house in Thousand Oaks recently sold for $19,000,000.00
Now go suck an egg, smartass.
You look at it that way the QE2 is a bargain.

Old town is about 4 square blocks. It represents about 1% of Thousand Oaks, regarding land mass ;-)
Well I'm only listening to what the experts associated to these ventures are saying.
Don McIntyre, who lent Jessica Watson her boat, says a basic boat could be fitted out for $A100,000.
JESSICA WATSON - The Making of Pink Lady
100K may be for a voyage mainly outside the Southern Ocean, and Jessica's little pink tank was more.
I have seen estimates in the high 6 figures ("wrong again liberal media!"). Actual ballpark might be, oh say $A300,000 (and you still have the boat at the end of the voyage)
And leave the driving to someone else
Before I knew any info on the Dad or family, I voiced an opinion about the irresponsibly of parents who would let a young girl take on this dangerous trip. I see nothing that has changed my opinion.
Think I heard thru the “vine” they moved to Oxnard.....
” Think I heard thru the vine they moved to Oxnard.....”
I hope they hablo the ol espanol ;-)
Of course he did, same with the Everest kid climber and any other reprehensible 15 minute of gamer out there using their kids to make a buck, our moral fabric is in shreds....
“he has 6 more chances at the record.”
Well it only costs $65,000 to get guided up Mt. Everest and the youngest to do so was 13, so maybe he should look elsewhere to get his kids into the record books. The mortality risk for Everest climbers is only about 10%, which is probably lower than the odds of getting killed trying to sail solo around the world.
Even in good times, sailing instruction doesn’t seem that lucrative, so I can’t quite understand why someone in that field living in an expensive area like Thousand Oaks would be having that many kids. It’s hard to feel sorry for his plight.
It’s nice to support your kids in pursuing their dreams. I just wonder whether he himself even recognizes how much “her” dream really simply reflected his own. It does definitely seem like safety considerations were ignored in the rush to get her into the record books. If the dream were simply to sail solo around the world, there’s no particularly good reason it couldn’t wait until a safer window of opportunity returned.
