... whose parents should lose custody of her immediately for letting her put her life in danger.Really? So letting children put life at risk is grounds for terminating parental rights? Should parents whose teens get driver's licences lose their rights? How about pilots licenses? Fishing licenses? Hunting licenses? Maybe those who let their children solo at sailing on any body of water? Water skiing maybe?
You have an odd perspective on relative risk, or perhaps I should point out, you have no perspective whatsoever. When you were at university, by any chance were you required to take a course called probability and statistics? Have you ever heard of that? Do you know how it works? re you aware that insurance actuaries calculate risk? Do you know HOW they calculate risk? If you really think letting your kids drive, or water ski or learn to fly an airplane are the statistically equivalent risks of letting them sail around the world alone on a boat, why do you let your kids do those things?
Absolutely.

LaLydia is making a very valid point, and water skiing or sailing on "any body of water" is quite different from being solo on the Indian ocean during the storm season.
The parents are very odd people to encourage this high risk behaviour. Yes, I think they should be looked at more closely.
