BOSTON (AP) -- An undocumented Harvard University student is facing deportation to Mexico after being detained by immigration authorities at a Texas airport, the student said Friday.

Eric Balderas, 19, who just completed his first year at Harvard, said he was detained Monday by immigration authorities when he tried to board a plane from his hometown of San Antonio to Boston using a consulate card from Mexico and his student ID.

The point is to comply with the laws you’re subject to, and please don’t try to set me up as a strawman for whatever suits your flavor of the day. If his illegal status was “irreparable” then so be it, although I have yet to find anything that depends on formalities rather than substance that is truly “irreparable.” The bottom line is - life ain’t fair, no-one with any authority to grant such ever said it would be - and if you can’t make yourself “legal” then get the h*ll out of here.

which may break his heart, but the law is the law.

A good education for him, something he wouldn't have learned at Harvard.

I don’t think I’ll hold my breath on this one. I just don’t see them deporting him. If they don’t deport convicted murderers and rapists then everyone else has a “free pass”.

I've noticed something along these lines. Rack up a bunch of DUI and burglary convictions and you get to stay. Try to become a productive member of society, and you get fast-tracked outta here. Recently I read about the Mexican wife of an American soldier, a woman who had lived in the United States for years, bore children to her husband, spoke English perfectly and never so much as received a speeding ticket get deported over some clerical errors on her immigration paperwork.

Meanwhile Jose with his 12 DUI convictions and five public intoxication arrests rotates in and out of jail without the slightest fear of deportation while at the same we're handing out legal immigration visas to Muslim Africans on terrorist watch lists.

He is occupying a place at Harvard that was denied an American student.

Only in the law school. If he's majoring in science or math, he's occupying a place that was denied a potential legal immigrant.

He should go to prison if he received Federal Aid. That would be theft.

I suspect the ACLU will be getting involved possibly claiming affirmative action
violation or something similarly idiotic.

He's not eligible to obtain a student visa.

Well, then, he KNEW that, so why the tears and tantrum from him? Can't have what he wants? Good he learns that now - Harvard can't give that to him.

I guess reading comprehension isn't your strong point.

Now that photo was really uneccessary.....as for me “crying about” this kid and going over to DU....pleeez dude. I sincerely hope that this kid is processed and deported like all the others and not given special treatment. My bet is that ICE will back off when the press and Obama get ahold of this and give him “deferred action”. In fact, I would not doubt that this was a set up to get immigration reform on the radar for the administration. My sole point is to make folks understand that there are a good many folks out there who are decent people who have no method to legitimize their status. Its easy to say “what do they not understand about illegal”. The same folks who say that will call an immigration lawyer the next day and say “I’ve got this [friend, nanny, gardener, concrete supervisor, roofer, etc] and he’s good people [”the best friend, nanny, etc I’ve ever had] can’t we do something about his/her situation. And the answer is no. All you have to do is go back to the post about the woman who is married to a U.S. citizen who is fighting for your country to get my drift...why make an exception for her....what does she “not understand about illegal”
