He won’t be put into general population until all the trials are done and they decide if they are going to extradite him to the US for extortion. I hope the US decides we don’t want him. Everybody will be better off if he stays in Peru. Except him.

Well, I can think of one good reason that he might be protected by the authorities in Peru. The US authorities have probably already talked to the Peruvian authorities that the US wants to get their hands on van der Sloot when he has finished his prison term in Peru -- and that they want to make sure that he's still around so that the US can convict him for what they've got in store for him.
