Barack Hussein Obama can't be seen to support any military action against Muslims. He is the son of a Muslim father, and is technically an apostate from Islam. Essentially, he is on his good behavior. He would be in personal danger if he were to side with Israel.

Obama is a sophomoric narcissist whose actions are guided by a combination of incredibly naive idealism and a towering self-regard.

And his idealism, in turn, was formed by the opinions with which he grew up -- which would be leftist in tone and tenor, and therefore (in this case) viscerally opposed to Israel.

I honestly don't believe he's given much thought to the longer-term consequences of his actions.
