I agree for the most part, except i don't think these ventures are as reckless (or adventurous) as they seem. What made this one somewhat reckless was that they decided to launch at a time that would put her on the Indian Ocean during winter, which as we've seen can be very rough. Apparently they took this risk in order for her to set the record, otherwise if they had waited the Australian girl would still have held the record for the youngest.

But to me the danger these record-seeking kids face are greatly overblown. Their boats are extremely advanced (nearly impossible to sink even if you wanted to) and are decked out with every kind of safety device imaginable. I think it's a feat of endurance (or at least not succumbing to boredom) and technology more so than of risk-taking.

My guess is that there are other pursuits that parents regularly allow their kids to engage in that are just as dangerous if not more so: such as riding horses, surfing, scuba diving, skateboarding, and even cheerleading.

when she’s an adult

For the purposes of sailing, she is an adult.

Julius Caesar commanded armies at 14 and did very well.

“its a 16 year old child....get a grip.”

Uhh, a sixteen year old can fly an airplane, drive a car, ride a horse over jumps, as well as walk and chew gum at the same time.

Maybe you were a sheltered child...sorry.

It sickens and saddens men to read a lot of the attitudes on this subject. This young girl and her parents should be proud of the attempt even if she did not reach her goals. The spirit and courage here is what allows the sedentary slugs of the world to ruminate about safety and security while some few test the boundaries. I regret the chances I didn’t take in life and the internal rewards of trying.

Great news, but one cannot help but wonder who is paying for this stunt? What's an A330 cost per hour? I'll bet just the cost of the search planes would put a kid through a decent college.

I know it's probabaly mom and dad's money to spend as they please. But what a waste.

We should cheer her for her bravery, and give thanks that she is safe.

In this case, bravery does not equal wisdom. This was a foolhardy decision by all involved (and yes, I'd have said this even if she had made it). And yes, I am very glad a young life with all before it was not lost on the high seas.

I agree with you, but that crash was caused by the adult instructor.

I can’t imagine any parent allowing a 16 year old girl to do something like this. Totally irresponsible.....there must be some money/publicity in it for them. They reminded me of the balloon parents - pathetic.

I guess you would have preferred that she stay home and play video games like every other teenager.

That is exactly what’s wrong with this country... Kids arnt mortivated to do anything these days. And when one does, everyone starts crying because the kid might get hurt.

We are raising a country full of overprotected wusses! If every child had the drive and ambition of this 16-year old, America’s future would be a bright shining star instead of the communist welfare state its turning into.

You cant lock these kids up in their rooms because you are terrified they might get hurt and THEN expect them to go out in the world at age 18 and figure out how to survive. It just doesnt work that way...Overprotecting the kids is creating a dependant generation.

Kind of on this topic. I was watching Imus interview Geraldo on his radio/TV show on FBN and the girl sailor was one of the topics.

Well, Geraldo was being that idiot Geraldo and when they went to break, I could read Imus's lips, off mic, say "he's such a f*ckin' ass!", referrring to Geraldo. Had to play it back a couple of times to be sure I saw what I saw. Someone finally called him what he is!

Some say everybody likes to win, nobody likes to lose.

The internal rewards depend on how we are thinking, our volition, and decisions we make.

Some seek to perform some great task simply in arrogance, not improving our internal rewards, but further scarring our thinking. Such actions merely substitute a counterfeit system of happiness for joy, but when the glands relax seep back into misery.

Too many of us seek that which we cannot keep, but never seek that which is eternal.
Others in the face of adversity may continue to persevere for even greater reward.

I suspect her greatest challenges lie ahead in facing the adversity of public humiliation by those who read into her actions more than what may have been there and the worldly consequences placed upon her. For the arrogant, there is temptation for her to try again as a form of justification of her thinking. Not only do I pray for her physical safety, but that she might remain or come to God on His terms to perform what He has planned for her in His Plan.

Julius Caesar commanded armies at 14 and did very well.

And Karl Von Clauswitz entered the military at 12. These are exceptional individuals, the bulk of those who enter the battlefield so young litter the ground as casualties.
