I didn't mention David Brooks, but I'd guess his stance (economically moderate, socially soft-liberal) is a consequence of both upbringing and "group-think" environmental influences. The man lives in a place where he is unlikely to meet a social conservative, ever. An unfortunate number of New Yorkers truly fear such people, as though they were a mass of crazy, Bible-thumpin' gun-totin' racist rednecks lookin' to lynch 'em a few Negroes and shotgun a few Jews. If you doubt me, engage one in conversation and tell him (or better yet: her) that you really love Sarah Palin, and you'll see the closest thing to a nervous breakdown you've ever witnessed.
