I googled Bartlett and it appears that you are right. Perhaps he was just a fan of Reagan? There were a lot of people who like him regardless of party affiliation.

I don't know what "turned" Bartlett; whether he suddenly decided to seek Cocktail Circuit Credibility (like David Frum or Peggy Noonan) or is secretly gay (like David Brock), or is criminally insane (like Arianna Huffington). In any event, he has "progressed" in his thinking in a way that most adults do not, absent a strong motivating reason. In my experience, I have never seen a free market champion become a Keynesian, ever, perhaps because it not only entails a change in economic theory, but in one's fundamental philosophy of the role of government.
