Fourth-grade teacher Jarretta Hamilton was newly married and expecting a baby when she went to speak with her supervisors in April of last year.
But the administrators at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud parried her query about maternity leave with a query of their own: When did she conceive?
After Hamilton admitted that her child had been conceived about three weeks before her February 20, 2009, wedding, the school fired her.
Now she's suing in federal court.
"She wants compensation for the loss of the job, and she's seeking compensatory damages for emotional distress," said Edward Gay, Hamilton's attorney who filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Orlando.
In the complaint, which asks for a trial by jury, Hamilton alleges her termination was based on the fact of her pregnancy — and that the school offended her by disclosing the information about when she conceived to other school staffers and the parents of students Hamilton taught during the 2008-2009 school year.
Hamilton did not authorize the school to reveal that information, according to the complaint.
She also tried to keep the matter from getting to this point, Gay said. She filed discrimination charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Florida Commission on Human Relations, but has since exhausted her options.
A July 20, 2009, letter signed by school administrator Julie Ennis explains why the school's administrators thought they had to fire Hamilton:
"Jarretta was asked not to return because of a moral issue that was disregarded, namely fornication, sex outside of marriage," the letter reads. "The employment application, which she filled out, clearly states that as a leader before our students we require all teachers to maintain and communicate the values and purpose of our school."

From any practical, rational perspective, pregnancy is a medical condition.
But you go ahead and live with your little theory.
It was for me. I had pre-term labor for both of my pregnancies, but especially with my twins. I was on complete bedrest for 10 weeks with my twins, and I spent about a week in the hospital getting a pump placed in my leg for terbutaline. Then I had a monitor on me that measured my contractions.
It definitely is a medical condition.

The school from hell has no evidence whatsoever, that the woman did anything to pervert the "sexual morals" of the children. I do know that the school from hell was corrupting the kid's moral fiber. It sticks out like a sore thumb!

Since we all know that everyone sins, then I wonder what the school teaches about how to handle sinning.
Personally, it seems like the school has an ongoing problem with gossipping, and that is also a sin. I think maybe they need to work on that sin.
Gossipping can cause more harm to more people than someone having sex with their fiance and then getting married right afterward.

Your logic sucks. There's no evidence the woman taught the kids contrary. The only evidence there is indicates that those that ran the school from hell used deception to uncover something that occurred 3 weeks before a marriage.

Not at all. Your overall issue, based on some other comments to MrEdd, etc. seems to be that you don't like the idea of teaching kids to abstain from premarital sex, instead of the case of this teacher in particular.
I did. Your use of the term "crucifiction" suggests what I said. That is a term used by Christ-mythers and other types of fringe atheist activists to denigrate the crucifixion of Christ.

The problem is with the treatment of the teacher. She was not teaching sex at all and they had to probe her to discover what she did 3 weeks prior to the wedding.

I don't think the school was right in spreading it around to the other teachers and the parents.
I do think the school was right in holding her to her contractual obligations.
I'm not exactly convinced the school had to "probe" to find out when she conceived. The article makes it appear that they asked a question, and she answered it. Hardly seems "probing" or "deceptive" to me....
A question is a probe, especially when it is a probe into an individuals private matters.

Fine, contractual obligations... The school from hell however, is not run by Christians. As I've pointed out previously on this thread, Christ cherished forgiveness and those in charge of the southland satanic school don't. Ok, unless she had a quick courthouse wedding or eloped, she wasn’t pregnant when she got engaged. I attended college at a place where it was well-known that girls who attended there were looking for their Mrs. degree and the largest degree program was in Music, because the women in that program wanted to be able to be choir directors when they were able to marry a preacher. I have yet to see a wedding planned in under 6 months.
