Business at Red and Black Cafe in Southeast Portland increases after police officer turned away

Showing a policeman the door turned out -- inadvertently -- to be a good business decision for the Red and Black Cafe in Southeast Portland.

The vegan establishment was deluged with customers in the two days after news came out last week that one of the co-owners had served coffee to a Portland police officer, then kicked him out.

"We had a couple of really busy days over the weekend," said John Langley, the co-owner who served Officer James Crooker and asked him to leave. "We had two $1,100 days, which is maybe double a typical day."

The story sparked a fiery response, with national coverage and about 600 comments posted on oregonlive.com. Along with a boost in customers, the cafe has received five threats of arson and other violence.

Many people also expressed outrage at Langley's treatment of Crooker, who's received an outpouring of support on the streets.

All that after buying a quick coffee on May 18. Crooker was walking out of the cafe when he was approached by a customer, Cornelia Seigneur, who said she appreciated the work of Portland police. Langley, who was watching, said seeing a uniformed officer in the cafe made him uncomfortable. So he went up and asked Crooker to leave, which he did.

I saw this story on FR a few days ago. I was at the Oregonian website looking for the latest news on the missing little boy, and saw this story too.

In Portland, cop-hating seems to be good business.

Take a look at these commie scumbags in the photo at the link.

Brilliance in action - publicly make a big deal about cops not being welsome and then brag you are rolling in the CASH from an increase in business.

It does not take the Amazing Kreskin to predict that the next news story on this joint will be that it was robbed.

It would be funny if the crooks were reading this “We had two $1,100 days”

Yeah, serving foliage to anarchists all day isn't exactly a robust business model. You might want to put a double meat bacon cheeseburger on that menu, eco boy!

That was already asked of the owner and he replied (I'm not making this up) that he would call his friends.

Whatta Brainiac.

Wait, wait, there's something fishy with this story... I've never seen an officer in uniform pay for a cup of coffee in my life!

Hey, they don't want the officer there, I see no problem with it. God Bless the freedom to be an idiot and an ass.

Love the guy with the "No Police" shirt.

From his looks, I assume he is a great admirer of the Second Amendment./sarc

FTA:

Online commenters have asked what the cafe's seven co-owners would do if they were attacked. Call the police?

"I don't think we are trying to be purists about it," Langley said. "We would prefer that there be some practical alternative to police like community forums for restorative justice, for example."

No, JennysCool is not making this up....

Ya know, if you take a big poop, your pants will fit better too...temporarily.

They needn't start watching the shopping channel regularly for a place to spend all that new money...it's called a surge...curiosity seekers, and probably some mangy press types too.

The asked a cop (who was on his way out the door anyway), to leave...now there's courage.

They made sure they got his money, FIRST.

And the threw him out just because he's a cop...and that's "profiling".

What about any of that makes these scrungebuckets into heroes?

Maybe a group of Hell's Angels should drop in for coffee...and "protest" that they can't also get a "Steak".
