Jang Sung Taek's Star Ascends Again
By Kim So Yeol
[2010-06-07 18:09 ]
The unexpected third meeting of the 12th Supreme Peoples Assembly was held today, the 7th, just two months after the second meeting on April 9th.
In the meeting, Jang Sung Taek was designated Vice-chairman of the National Defense Commission at Kim Jong Ils suggestion, according to the Chosun Central News Agency (KCNA).
Additionally, the Premier of the Cabinet was replaced, with Choi Young Rim taking over from Kim Young Il. Choi Young Rim was formerly Chief Secretary of the Party in Pyongyang, and is a member of the Politburo and a delegate to the 12th Supreme Peoples Assembly.
There was also a far-reaching Cabinet reshuffle: three vice-premiers were relieved of their duties, six vice-premiers were appointed, and three further persons took up ministerial positions.
Those who have been relieved of their duties are vice-premiers Kwak Beom Ki, Oh Su Yong and Park Myung Sun. Kang Neung Su, Kim Rak Hee, Lee Tae Nam and Cheon Ha Cheol were appointed vice-premiers. Additionally, Cho Byung Su became Machine Industry Minister and a vice-premier simultaneously, and Han Kwang Bok became Electronics Minister and a vice-premier.
Ahn Cheong Su was appointed Minister of Light Industry, Cho Young Cheol became Minister of Foodstuffs and Consumer Goods Industry, and Park Myung Cheol became Minister of Physical Culture and Sports.
Kim Jong Il, who was present at the meeting, has participated biennially in the SPA since 2003. He did not appear at the second meeting of the SPA earlier this year.

It appears that two members who can potentially present obstacles to Jang were conveniently removed. One is Kim Il-chol who was publicly dismissed from his post a few weeks ago. The other is Ri Je-gang, a political rival of Jang Sung-taek. It could have been a lucky break for Jang that Ri was killed in a car accident. Or Jang could have had a hand in Ri's death. Anyway, he is now dead.
He is now positioned to exercise sweeping power. However, I think he may not have control of everything. Some military branch and security agency may be controlled by somebody else in case Jang has wrong idea.
Maybe we should start 'Kim Jong-il dead pool,' now that Chia Head finished contingency plan if he suddenly dies.:-)

Photo of Kim Jong-un recently obtained by Japanese media(one in the center)
Allegedly taken while Jong-un was attending school in Switzerland. Looks like it was taken while he was a teenager(late teens?) Photos on both ends are that of Kim Il-sung, his grandfather during his youth. Jong-un has fair amount of resemblance to his grandfather.

Of course, Kim Jong-un will be a king-in-training. Fish Lips is his Eminent Grise. Well, that is the arrangement for now.
